Caleb Miligan (William Ash), who lives in Emmerdale, is afraid because he’s keeping a secret that could cause his marriage to end. He talked Ruby’s mother, Helen (Sharon Maughan), into putting £100,000 into his account before she died. In exchange, he promised to try to get Ruby to go see her.
Because Helen was mean to Ruby when she was younger by cutting her off from the family because she was seeing Caleb, he had no plans to do this. Caleb didn’t expect Ruby to be so upset when she learned her mother had died and realized she would never be able to talk to her about why she made the choices she did in the past.
William Ash said, “He’s very scared because he took £100,000 from Helen before she died and put it in his own account, and he’s pretty sure that Helen’s lawyer is going to find out about it.”
He is really, really scared that that will be found out. He is quickly putting together ideas for how he might be able to bury it and keep Ruby from finding it.
William says that Caleb “knows he’s made a huge mistake.”
“When he first went to see Helen in the hospital, he really went there to protect Ruby because Helen had been so mean and cruel to Ruby that she had left her and stopped caring about her, so he was going there to protect her.” So when Ruby is crushed by the death of her mother, it’s not at all what he expects.
She tells him how she feels about losing her mother and how she didn’t get any closure. She also says that her mother wanted to see her before she died, which makes her think that her mother may have wanted to say sorry for everything she did. That’s clear to Caleb, and he feels awful about it.
Caleb was shocked by Ruby’s strong response to Helen’s death. He fears the worst if she ever finds out that he saw Helen and about the money.
“I believe the unknown is the scariest thing because he was shocked by how she responded to the death of her mother.” William agreed. “I think he’s quietly scared that she will find out that he was involved and met up with her mom before she died.” Things between them might end because of it.
“At this point, she could easily just quit him and move in with Nicky (Lewis Cope) in San Francisco or wherever he is traveling around the world, because she might see Caleb as toxic and not someone she wants to be with.” Because of this, I believe his situation is very dangerous.
William said that Caleb wouldn’t be able to rest easy because the secret could be revealed at any time, even if Helen’s lawyer doesn’t ask where the £100,000 went.
“I think it might be in the mail; it’s something that will be hanging over him.” He is aware that this might show up again at any time. That seems like it would be very painful. That lie is always going to be there, so he can never be happy. It could come back and hurt him.
Caleb and Ruby are very close to each other, and William said that Caleb will do anything to keep his marriage.
He seems to understand now how important she is to him and how much he needs her. When he was 14, 15, she was the only person who was there for him when he had no one else. Because she became his family, they count on each other.
It would be terrible for him to lose her. Even though he feels very close to Cain (Jeff Hordley), Chas (Lucy Pargeter), and the rest of the Dingles and has found a home with them.
“But Ruby is really his rock.” It would break his heart, and I think he would do anything for her.
